National Relief Week

On May 25, the National Relief Day is celebrated to reaffirm the importance of promoting and supporting a culture of care that places the person, their needs, and their dignity at the center.

It represents a valuable opportunity to raise awareness among citizens, institutions, and healthcare professionals about the value of pain relief and quality of life in disease pathways, especially in the most complex and delicate cases.

Ensuring the right to relief means promoting effective palliative care, person-centered assistance, and human and competent support that can respond not only to physical pain but also to the emotional and psychological dimensions of suffering.

Palliative care has been defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "...an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing issues associated with incurable diseases, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and optimal treatment of pain and other physical, psychological, social, and spiritual problems."

The Lazio Region has developed a palliative care development plan to ensure the accreditation of 10 local palliative care networks (RLCP) by December 2025, offering uniform pathways for patients with palliative care needs throughout the regional territory.
